Corporal Mathew Bowman

US Marines

We are honored to have CPL Mathew Bowman attend and handcycle the 10K course as part of the 3rd Run Forrest Run 5/10K.

Matt is a native of Lafayette, IN where he attended McCutcheon High School, and competed as a varsity wrestler for four years. Following graduation in 2007, Matt attended basic training for the United States Marine Corps in MCRD San Diego.

While stationed at the Navy Submarine base in Kingsbay, Georgia, Matt met his wife, Paige. They were married on June 26th, 2010 and now have three sons.

In July of 2010, Matt was relocated to an infantry unit at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. He was now a member of 3rd battalion, 8th Marines, India company. His unit was deployed in late August 2010 as part of the 26th MEU. He was aboard the USS Kearsarge. The ships sailed across the Atlantic, into the Mediterranean, and through the Suez Canal, and into the Red Sea.

From there Matt and his Unit went into the country of Jordan where they helped train a unit of the Jordanian Army. While in Jordan, the Marines in 3/8 were able to see some ancient Roman ruins, the ancient city of Petra, and float in the Dead Sea.

In December of 2010, 3/8 got the news that they would be heading into Afghanistan to aide another unit. They flew from Jordan to Kuwait to Afghanistan. They were in Afghanistan by the first week of January 2011. The days were filled with daily patrols and usually nothing more than small skirmishes with the enemy firing 10 shots before hiding.

Matt’s tour in Afghanistan came to an end after only a month and a half. On January 28th, 2011 Matt stepped on an IED while patrolling a field. He was Medivacked to  Camp Bastian and then flown to Landsthul Hospital in Germany.

His family was already waiting for him by the time he reached Walter Reed Military Hospital in Washington D.C. Matt woke up and found out that he had lost both legs above the knew, multiple fingers on his left hand, and multiple teeth.

Matt spent a year and a half in physical therapy at Walter Reed before retiring in October 2012. He is also a big Notre Dame fan! He is now going to school to be a Social Studies teacher and coaching his kids in multiple sports.
